October 1, 2009

Henry James Tate made his debut into the world on October 1, 2009 at 6:36 pm. He weighted 7lbs 9oz and was 19.5 inches long. If you are interested in reading his birth story, please keep reading. Otherwise, feel free to look at the pictures on the bottom of this post.

Adie went into early labor about 6:00 pm on Wednesday night, Sept 30th. After two hours of consistent and strong contractions (most of them taking place at Casey's, the Irish pub in our neighborhood) we called the doctor about 8:00pm and were sent to the hospital. We checked in through the emergency room and were sent to triage in labor and delivery. Adie was 2.5cm dialated, so they had us walk around the floor for an hour and a half and checked again. Since she had not made any progress in that time, they sent us home with a sleeping pill for Adie and told us to keep checking the contractions in the morning.

So the sleeping pill did not work and on Thursday morning, we headed back to the hospital after calling the doctor. We got checked in about 11:00 am and were put directly in a labor and delivery room. They checked Adie again and she was 5 cm. The nurse tried to put in the IV and could not find a vein and had to get help. By this time, Adie requested an epi but could not get one until they got the IV in. It took them 1.5 hours and 3 different tries to get the IV and the epi finally went in at 2:00pm. The epi went a little too deep and totally numbed Adie from the chest down for the next three hours (while she slept). About 5:00 pm, the epi started to wear off and about 5:30 pm the doctor came in and Adie starting pushing. After about an hour of pushing, Henry came into this world. He looked great and took to breast feeding about 30 min after birth. Ian cut the cord and did a great job of coaching through the whole process.

Prenancy Pictures

Three days before my due date, Ian and I were invited to a black tie event through some funders from TFA. We had a great time and event won some tickets to the Science Museum from the auction. We took some pregnancy pictures since we were dressed to the 9s.

Ultrasound Pictures!!!!

Here are the first pictures of Baby Boy Tate!!! We are really excited and glad to share them. I realize that not everyone has the medical background that Ian has, so I will try to explain them below each picture. For those of you who like numbers, he is 15 oz. and is about 15 cm long (I think). He is healthy and everything looks good.

This is a view of the babies head and his legs, he is curled up in a ball.
This is the top of the baby's head and his hand waving at us!

Proof that it is a BOY!!

More proof!

The baby's face. I know he looks like an alien, but it should get better before the birth

Trip to California

Ian and I got a rare opportunity to go back to California for two days a few weeks ago. We had a great time seeing family and friends, and Ian had not seen Max for over a year, so it was great to see him as well. Here are a few shots for the whirlwind two days.

While Ian was catching up on his sleep, I caught up with my high school friend Carrie and her two adorable children, Luca and Sabina (who did not wake up at all while I was there)!

It is really hard to get a picture of Max because he moves too much, but here is the best of him and me during our visit and our 10 + pictures taken together
This is the best of Max and Ian on my camera. We got a great one on Matt and Sara's camera but I only have that is paper copy and my scanner is not working.
We had a great time catching up with friends from San Francisco. Everyone was able to make it out to beers and dinner in Berkeley, and it was great to see how people are doing - lots of excitement with marriages, engagements, starting PhD programs, upcoming graduations, and chicken raising.
Overall, it was a great time and we are so glad we got to see all our friends and family. I am heading back out in July (probably not with Ian) and hope to actually get some pictures of my parents and Matt and Sara, who I promised we did see!

Adie's Birthday and Skiing

Here are a few pictures and a quick update on our lives. We had a wonderful Christmas with Ian's parents and sister Gillian in town. Ian was off for both Dec 24th and Dec 25th, so he got to spend Christmas with his family. It was pretty low-key, and the highlight of the my gifts was a Wii and Rock Band. I am already playing medium on the drums and guitar (but not the singing). We did get a chance to go to Zoo Lights at the Denver zoo and Ian and his family went up skiing after I had left for California. (There are no pictures to post because we did not take any - I will try to add them later if they come from Ian's family)

I spent the week between Christmas and New Years in California with my family. It was really nice and relaxing. I hung out with my parents, a ton of friends from San Francisco and Stanford and of course, Matt, Sara and Max! Max is adorable at 17 months and is a real speed demon. My parents and I took him to Golden Gate Park and he ran all over the place - we could hardly keep up. He seemed to enjoy the books we got him for Hannuakah, and enjoyed showing me all his new toys. (Once again, no pictures as I did not have the camera - although I did get some good pictures on my i-Phone, but I don't know how to put them in here)

The first week in January, Ian and I went up to the mountains for vacation. We skiied 4 days and they were all amazing! We even took a video of us skiing with Ian's new video camera.

This is a picture of Mt of the Holy Cross from Blue Sky Basin at Vail
Ian and I on the slopes at Breckenridge
Here we are at the top of Blue Sky Basin in Vail. I think that is the same mountain in the background as above - Mt of the Holy Cross - Ian was very excited about it.

I got the pleasure of celebrating my 30th birthday a number of time with lost of friends and family. I had wonderful lunches, drinks, dinner and desserts with friends both in Denver and California, my Mom took my sister-in-law and I to dim sum lunch and got us both massages on my actual birthday, and my parents took me out to Ciopino for dinner that night. Ian threw a bowling party for me when we got back to Denver and I got to celebrate my 30th with friends and family back here as well. The only event I have pictures of is the bowling party - I really need to bring my camera to more places - but here are a few shots from that night.

Ian and I at the bowling alley - if you look closely you can see the beautiful necklace he got me for my birthday!

Cat, Rachel, Nate and Jess were a pretty good team - but not quite good enough to beat . . .
Jenna, Chrissy, Mahlet, Saloni and Jen (and Kirsten and Cannon who were out of the shot)- the winning team (minus Jenna, who was just cheering on)
