Henry James Tate made his debut into the world on October 1, 2009 at 6:36 pm. He weighted 7lbs 9oz and was 19.5 inches long. If you are interested in reading his birth story, please keep reading. Otherwise, feel free to look at the pictures on the bottom of this post.
Adie went into early labor about 6:00 pm on Wednesday night, Sept 30th. After two hours of consistent and strong contractions (most of them taking place at Casey's, the Irish pub in our neighborhood) we called the doctor about 8:00pm and were sent to the hospital. We checked in through the emergency room and were sent to triage in labor and delivery. Adie was 2.5cm dialated, so they had us walk around the floor for an hour and a half and checked again. Since she had not made any progress in that time, they sent us home with a sleeping pill for Adie and told us to keep checking the contractions in the morning.
So the sleeping pill did not work and on Thursday morning, we headed back to the hospital after calling the doctor. We got checked in about 11:00 am and were put directly in a labor and delivery room. They checked Adie again and she was 5 cm. The nurse tried to put in the IV and could not find a vein and had to get help. By this time, Adie requested an epi but could not get one until they got the IV in. It took them 1.5 hours and 3 different tries to get the IV and the epi finally went in at 2:00pm. The epi went a little too deep and totally numbed Adie from the chest down for the next three hours (while she slept). About 5:00 pm, the epi started to wear off and about 5:30 pm the doctor came in and Adie starting pushing. After about an hour of pushing, Henry came into this world. He looked great and took to breast feeding about 30 min after birth. Ian cut the cord and did a great job of coaching through the whole process.
